He's depicted as a mysterious figure who looks similar to Kirby, and the creators left his identity for the players to decide. Meta Knight seems like the Vader to Kirby's Luke. He wears a mask, has a swordfight with the protagonist, and there's a revelation about this identity. He's just supposed to be that sort of character I think.
